Yak Cheese Himalayan Chews

Himalayan yak cheese chews, also sold as cheese bones, in nine flavours: Natural, Blueberry, Cranberry, Mango, Strawberry, Mint, Coconut, Turmeric and Pumpkin. Available in small and large.

What is in them

Yak milk, lime juice and a pinch of salt. The flavoured versions add one ingredient to that base, so the mint cheese bone contains mint and the cranberry one contains cranberry. Nothing else goes in: no cereal fillers, no glycerine, no added colour. Naturally low in lactose, though not lactose free.

Choosing a size

Small suits little breeds and gentle chewers. Large suits bigger dogs and determined chewers. Match the size to how hard your dog chews rather than what it weighs, and make sure the bar is always bigger than your dog can fit in its mouth.

Choosing a flavour

Start with Natural if it is your dog's first cheese bone, because nothing has been added to it. Mint is the one to reach for if breath is the problem, Pumpkin if digestion is. The rest come down to preference, and rotating them keeps treat time interesting. Flavour makes no difference to how hard the bar is or how long it lasts.

Feeding and supervision

Supervise every chew session and take the bar away once it is small enough to swallow whole. That last piece does not have to be thrown out: under a minute in the microwave puffs it into a soft treat. Suitable from about six months, once the adult teeth are in. Put fresh water out alongside.

Storage

Keep somewhere cool and dry. Ambient shelf life is four years. In UAE summer, store in a cupboard rather than a car or a balcony.
